In a whirlwind of vibrant colors, spirited performances, and cultural festivities, Sekolah Lentera Kasih Makassar welcomed the Year of the Dragon with open arms during our joyous Chinese New Year celebration in 2024. With the theme "Year of the Dragon: Brings Good Fortune, Wealth, Prosperity, and Longevity," our school community came together to honor this auspicious occasion with enthusiasm and reverence.
The beating heart of our celebration was undoubtedly the traditional Barongsai dance performances, gracefully executed by our talented students. With intricate choreography and vibrant costumes, these captivating performances brought the spirit of the dragon to life, symbolizing strength, power, and good fortune for the year ahead. As the majestic dragons danced and twirled to the rhythmic beat of drums and cymbals, they brought joy and blessings to all who witnessed their mesmerizing spectacle.
But our Chinese New Year celebration was not just about performances; it was also a time for hands-on exploration and creativity. Students eagerly participated in crafting sessions, where they had the opportunity to make their own dragons from colorful paper and other materials. With skilled hands and boundless imagination, they brought these mythical creatures to life, infusing each creation with their own unique flair and personality.
In addition to crafting, our students showcased their culinary skills with a special cooking demonstration featuring the traditional Chinese New Year delicacy, Nian Gao. Under the guidance of our talented student chefs, participants learned the art of preparing this sweet and sticky rice cake, believed to bring prosperity and good luck in the coming year. As the aroma of freshly cooked Nian Gao filled the air, students savored the opportunity to learn about the cultural significance of this beloved dish and to share in its delicious taste.
To further enrich our understanding of Chinese New Year traditions, our celebration also included a fun quiz related to the history and customs of this festive occasion. From the origins of the zodiac animals to the significance of various symbols and rituals, participants tested their knowledge and learned fascinating facts about Chinese culture and heritage. Through friendly competition and interactive learning, students gained a deeper appreciation for the rich tapestry of traditions that surround Chinese New Year.
