Chinese New Year Celebration 2025: "New Hopes for the Year of the Snake" at SLK Makassar

SLK Makassar

On January 24, 2025, Sekolah Lentera Kasih (SLK) Makassar joyfully welcomed the Chinese New Year with a vibrant celebration themed "New Hopes for the Year of the Snake" (蛇年新希望). This event was designed to introduce students to the rich traditions of Chinese culture while fostering creativity, reflection, and community spirit. With a day full of performances, art, and meaningful activities, it was a perfect balance of fun and learning for students from Grades 1 to 6.

The theme for 2025, centered around the Chinese zodiac sign of the Snake, emphasized wisdom, transformation, and good fortune. Each activity during the celebration reflected these values, helping students engage with cultural traditions in a meaningful way. Below, we explore the highlights of the day in four key areas:

1. Engaging Performances that Set the Tone

The celebration began at 8:15 AM with an opening prayer and warm remarks by Mr. Riwanto and Ms. Mery, setting a respectful and celebratory atmosphere. Soon after, Grade 4 students took the stage with their performance of the song "有舍必有得" (You She Bi You De), a poignant reminder of hope and perseverance.

This was followed by a lively group sing-along of "新年幸福绕" (Xin Nian Xing Fu Rao), led by the teachers. The harmony and cheerful melodies symbolized the joy and togetherness associated with Chinese New Year. Grade 1 students delighted the audience with their vibrant rendition of the iconic song "恭喜恭喜" (Gong Xi Gong Xi), dressed in traditional red and pink Cheongsam outfits, which added authenticity and color to the celebration.

The highlight of the performances was the Lion Dance, a time-honored tradition in Chinese culture. The red and yellow lions moved energetically to the rhythm of drums, mesmerizing the audience. Students excitedly participated in the ritual of “feeding the lion” with angpao envelopes, a gesture that symbolizes prosperity and good luck. Each class then took group photos with the lion dancers, capturing the joy of the moment.

2. Hands-On Classroom Activities to Foster Creativity

After the stage performances, students transitioned to their classrooms for interactive activities designed to spark creativity and deepen cultural appreciation:

  • Grades 1–3 created colorful paper snakes. Using vibrant materials like colored paper, googly eyes, and red tassels, students crafted snakes that symbolized transformation and wisdom, embodying the zodiac sign of 2025.

  • Grades 4–6 designed elegant fans using angpao envelopes. With the help of their teachers, students assembled fans adorned with tassels and metallic thread, a nod to the artistry and symbolism in Chinese traditions.

These hands-on activities not only allowed students to explore their artistic talents but also reinforced the cultural values of patience and creativity. By making crafts with their own hands, students learned the importance of effort and persistence, values that align with the attributes of the Snake.

3. Reflecting on Hopes and Wishes for the Year Ahead

One of the most meaningful moments of the day was the wish-making activity. Students were given the opportunity to reflect on their aspirations for the Year of the Snake and write them down on decorative red cards. These wishes were then hung on a specially decorated wish tree, symbolizing growth and the fulfillment of dreams.

Teachers selected the best wishes from each class, which were later displayed and shared during the closing session. Prizes were awarded to the top three wishes, inspiring students to think deeply about their goals and the values they want to embody in the coming year. This activity not only encouraged optimism but also fostered self-expression among students, leaving a lasting impression on their young minds.

4. Interactive Learning Through Multimedia and Competitions

The final segment of the event brought students back to the main hall for an engaging multimedia session. They watched a video about the 12 Chinese zodiac animals, which explained the cultural significance of each sign. This was followed by a quiz tailored to different grade levels, with questions designed to test their understanding of the zodiac and its traditions.

The quiz winners, along with the best wish-makers, received prizes during the closing session. Adding to the excitement, Mr. Anton and Ms. Angel performed a lively duet, bringing the day to a joyful close. As the event concluded, students left with smiles, prizes, and a deeper appreciation for Chinese culture.

A Celebration of Cultural Heritage and Community Spirit

The Chinese New Year celebration at SLK Makassar was more than just a festive event. It was a vibrant blend of education, creativity, and reflection that emphasized the values of wisdom, transformation, and optimism.
